About Troop 83

Troop 83 meets on Monday nights at the First United Methodist Church located at Stover and Elizabeth Streets. We meet in the Fellowship Hall which is located on the west side of the building. General troop meetings are held every Monday except for the last Monday of the month. The meetings could entail skill building, merit badge work, advancement opportunities, and guest speakers. The meeting on the last Monday is for planning at the scout level and the adult leadership level.

On those Mondays where the church is closed for a holiday, the troop often meets at an alternative place. Those would include the pool at EPIC, local parks, and other locations. Alternative locations are announced in advance.

Troop 83 currently has 20 scouts divided up into two patrols for the younger scouts and a third patrol for the older scouts. The troop encourages adult participation to help the troop fulfill its mission to the scouts. Adult positions include Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, Committee Chair, Committee Members, Treasurer, Secretary, Advancement Coordinator, Star to Eagle Coordinator, High Adventure Coordinator, and other positions as needed for fundraising and other tasks. Several adults are registered Merit Badge Counselors in topics ranging from citizenship and communications to shooting sports and rock climbing.

Troop 83 has monthly outings except for March (Spring Break) and November and December (Fundraiser). Places we have gone are Colorado State Forest, Sand Dunes NM, North Platte canoeing, backpacking, hiking, and other activities. Troop 83 participates in the three District campouts of Spring and Fall Camporees and Klondike (snow camping). We also assist in programs at one of the Haunted Weekends. Scouts plan outings and where to go for the outings.

Troop 83 also has a New Scout Weekend to assist new scouts in the Trail to First Class. This is an excellent time for new parents to attend to become more familiar with the Scouting Method.

Troop 83 attends summer camp. In 2013, we are attending Ben Delatour Scout Ranch outside of Red Feather, Colorado. In 2014, the troop is attending Melita Island Scout Camp located on Flat Head Lake in Montana.

Troop 83 has a wide variety of equipment we use during outings. This includes tents, stoves, cooking gear, lanterns, propane tanks, and large dining canopies. The troop has some personal gear such as backpacks, clothing, and other small items to borrow.

Currently the dues are $65 per year plays an additional $10 for BSA registration. A Boys Life subscription is available for an additional amount. Summer Camp is usually $240 to $270 per scout depending on where we attend. Outings are usually $20-$25 per outing. If an outing has a higher than usual cost, this is announced in advance.

Troop 83 has two fundraisers per year. The first is the Fall popcorn sale. The second is the Christmas Tree sale held from Thanksgiving to Christmas. All of the funds generated by the scouts are held in their scout account. These funds are then used to pay for summer camp, outings, dues, and equipment. For example if a scout sells popcorn and works five tree lot shifts, they can pay for summer camp.
